Gallery Exhibition: Typo-Heterochronia Between Seoul-Atlanta
The Bakery South Downtown, Atlanta
November 15 - December 10, 2021
Typo-Heterochronia investigates some multiple modes of typography: fluidity, variability, code-mesh-ness, simultaneity, heterogeneity, hybridity, vernacularity, and relativity. This exhibition will feature Korean, Korean-American, and American designers (based in Atlanta) whose work is based on type-driven design ranging from typographic surfaces to creative codes to spatial forms. This exhibition conceives of new narratives in typography research and attempts to build a global-local network between Seoul, Korea, and Atlanta, USA.
Submission: Subconscious Typography
Role: Designer
Subconscious Typography explores communication as a form of expression, both visually and internally. Communication is at the core of our being as individuals and within the world around us. It comes in many forms, communication with self, community, environment, and so on. It’s our intent and method behind communication that shapes our identity. Communication can be visual such as what you see in this gallery, it can be verbal through tone and inflection, it can be nonverbal through gestures and thoughts, and it can be written though diction and style. Typography, the art and technique of arranging type, is only one of infinite methods of communication, yet it plays such a fundamental role in contemporary visual design. Variable and transformative, it mimics that of the human experience, exploring complex, interconnected, and hybrid systems. This work relies on an expanse of different typographic forms to provoke questions regarding our approach to communication. Our reactions to language, form, and momentum aim to illuminate our internal beliefs regarding our perceptions of communication.
